Cincinnati authorities reported that a 3-year-old toddler shot himself fatally while playing with a gun he had found in his mother’s purse. The police was informed by the child’s mother, who made an emergency call saying that the toddler was not getting a pulse.
The child found the gun in his mother’s purse. The woman said that she carried the gun in her bag. After getting home the woman placed the bag down and the child found it. The 3-year old toddler shot himself in the chest and was pronounced dead at the hospital.
This is the second case of accidental death of a young person caused by gunshot month in Hamilton. In addition gun control has lately become a highly controversial in the US.
Moreover according to data gathered by Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America it seems that in the US two children die every day because of accidental shootings. This means nearly 100 children per year.
Authorities are trying to decide if somebody should be charged in this incident. The Butler County prosecutor said that next week he will take the case to a grand jury. On Friday prosecutor Mike Gmoster declared that grand jurors in the county should know the evidence about how the child had gotten the gun to see if any charges should be filed.
The mother was identifies as Elizabeth Green and her son was Marques Green. The police released a 911 audiotape with the mother reporting the accident:
“My son just shot himself and I’m not getting a pulse. The gun is mine. It is in the house, I carry it in my purse, I laid it down. We just got home.”
After the incident a detective was seen leaving the house with a small black handgun which he placed into an evidence bag.
One of the neighbors said she heard the mother screaming and went to her balcony to check what had happened. Amanda Red declared that she saw Elizabeth Green holding her son who was completely lifeless.
The second recent case of reckless homicide took place on June 3 when a 16-year-old boy shot another boy who was 14 years old. On Thursday the boy charged of reckless homicide was arraigned in juvenile court.
