BEACON TRANSCRIPT – Everybody has to deal with stress on a daily basis, but some people seem to do it better than others. A new study looked at the levels of stress among Americans, and tried to determine which are the most and the least stressed states. Alabama made the top of the list of the most stressed states.
The study was developed by researchers at WalletHub. They managed to analyze all 50 states and to establish the levels of stress among them. They discovered that Alabama was the most stressed state, while the opposite was Minnesota, with the most relaxed people. They took into consideration many factors that might influence these levels.
Factors which might make people stressed
Researchers looked at several people from each state and looked at four parameters which could influence how stressed they were. These parameters were family, work, health, and safety. Then, they developed 33 metrics which they could rate from 0 to 100.
Some of these metrics looked into more detail at what could make people stressed. Many of them were related to family, such as the necessary costs for a child’s care or parental choices. Others, related to work, questioned people on how happy they were with their wages or working hours.
To make sure that they get accurate results, they also looked at statistics from the U.S. Census or the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Thus, they were able to rank the states from the most stressed to the least stressed.
Why is Alabama the most stressed state?
Researchers found Alabama to be the most stressed state in the United States, with a score of 56.91. Among other factors, researchers found that most people in this state were in bad health. Their mental state is not the best either, as Alabama hosts the smallest number of psychologists in the country.
Besides, Alabamans have a precarious economic situation, and their sleep pattern is irregular. All these factors combined contribute to the stress levels in people and make them feel unhappier. They admit that they are incredibly stressed and often complain about this situation.
Minnesota is the state with the lowest stress rate, with the score 31.07. Here, people have better health and plenty of psychologists. One interesting thing that the researchers discovered was the fact that Minnesota had a low divorce rate. Also, the states which came immediately after it on the least stressed scale were Iowa and North Dakota.
Thus, the geographical placement might have something to do with the levels of stress in a state. This might be true, since states from the South have more stressed people, who are paid less and who have more health problems.
