The Witcher’s story can also be read in Andrzej Sapkowski’s saga of five novels.
BEACON TRANSCRIPT – America’s Writers Guild (WGA) has communicated the video games nominated for the Outstanding Achievement in Writing a Videogame award. Assassin’s Creed, the Witcher 3 and Tomb Raider were nominated for Best Writing 2015 alongside Pillars of Eternity.
Video games such as Assassin’s Creed latest part, Syndicate, or the Wild Hunt of Witcher 3, or even the Tomb Raider’s Rise are great games, with an incredibly complex story and very talented people behind them. But some say they are too mainstream to win such awards, other indie games having a more impressive writing behind them. And maybe they did deserve a prize, but the writers have to be members of the WGA Caucus of Videogame Writers in order to be nominalized.
The awards will be given at an event that will take place simultaneously in New York and Los Angeles on the 13th of February.
But the indie video games enthusiasts have their own finalists to root for at the Festival for Independent Games (IGF). The festival announced the nominees for Narrative Excellence for this year, these are Her Story, Black Closet, Beginner’s Guide. Undertale, That Dragon, Cancer, and the Magic Circle.
The finalists for the Choice Awards of Game Developers are: Her Story, Witcher 3, Life is Strange, Beginner’s Guide and Undertale for the category of Best Narrative. These awards, alongside the IGFs, will be handed in a ceremony that will take place on the 16th of March in San Francisco. The ceremony will be available on Twitch live stream.
It seems like the major favorites are much-awaited sequels of cult games as Assassin’s Creed, the Witcher 3 and Tomb Raider were nominated for Best Writing. This comes as a sort of a surprise since, in the latest years, sequels ended up in disappointing fans. This actually makes a gamer wonder why the much-awaited Fallout 4, or Call of Duty are not on the list of nominees.
Maybe the fact that the Assassin’s Creed and Witcher games have inspired novels following and continuing the game’s narrative is an advantage. Fans have had constant contact with the story and spin-offs making them, even more, impatient, hungry for a new development, a new scenery.
Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski has published five major novels that focus on the story of the Witcher Games, Blood of Elves, Time of Contempt and Baptism of Fire, The Swallow’s Tower and Lady of the Lake. This can only come as good news for the game’s fans as their patience could be rewarded with 2 more parts of their favorite RPG.
