Within the state of Kentucky, it appears that state clerks no longer wish to do their jobs, instead issue a demand for online marriage licenses. Although it is their duty and within their jurisdiction to allow two souls to unite, no matter the circumstances, discrimination based on same sex marriage is still at its highest peak.
After American couple Jim Cato and Joe Stapleton, have been turned down countless times in their attempt of getting married, they decided that only by filling a lawsuit against Katie Lang, clerk at the Hood County, will they be able to obtain the same rights as any other couple.
Although the struggle for same sex marriage is thought to have ended at the end of June this year along with the Supreme Court ruling, it appears that there are still people within the Unites States that firmly disagree with other people’s life choices.
According to recent statements, clerk Katie Lang was well aware that sooner or later, an issue of this sort will fuel hatred against her. Throughout the years she has also become known for her unacceptable attitude towards homosexuals by clearly stating that in her eyes ‘marriage is for one man and one woman, because it did derive from the Bible’.
Based on the information within the lawsuit, it appears that both men have issued their requirements countless times and unfortunately they were denied each and every time. Interesting as it may be, this lawsuit is in fact the second one already that has been issued for the County Clerk’s office in Texas.
After being together for 27 years, it is of course natural for the couple to react in such manner. Even though they had already received their marriage license, the press added, the fact that both Cato and Stapleton strongly implied that clerk Katie Lang is obligated to pay for all the necessary fees.
Although the lawsuit against her was filed only ten days after the court ruling, Lang did not have any other choice but to give up and accept the required marriage license, despite her religious beliefs. It is because of Jan Soifer, the two men’s attorney and his decision to not drop the lawsuit that once again people are fighting to improve the rights not only for gay couples, but also for straight ones.
As difficult as it may seem, we live in a society that keeps on changing. However, it is unfortunate that most individuals do not understand that, we as well evolve and adapt along with the world that we live in.
