BEACON TRANSCRIPT- A new dinosaur species has been discovered in Australia by paleontologists. This dinosaur species has some unique figures such as a really long neck and large body.
It is extremely rare to find a new dinosaur species in Australia because fossils are not easy to find in that area. This discovery is going to help experts know more about dinosaurs and how they spread around the Globe. Scientists say that around the world there are thousands of dinosaur species that have not yet been discovered or are unidentified.
This discovery is not as recent as we think it is. It actually happened in 2005 when David Elliott found the fossils and his wife reconstructed them. They realized that what they found was a large dinosaur species that doesn’t resemble any other species found until now. They figured out that it was part of the vegetarian dinosaurs that are known as sauropods.
Now, after almost 11 years Stephen Poropat and his team made the discovery public in Scientific Reports. This dinosaur species got the name Savannasaurus elliottorum in order to match with the name of the one that discovered it and the region in which it was found.
Many experts confirmed the fact that it is a very rare and interesting discovery because there are not many fossils in Australia and the ones that exist are very small and can’t be reconstructed into a dinosaur. They say that this is unique because this dinosaur has been reconstructed almost completely.
It is an interesting dinosaur species because of its weight that could have been more than 40,000 pounds and its length of 50 feet. Despite the fact that they did not find any teeth, they were able to assume that it was a vegetarian because of its figure and a long neck with which he ate from tall trees like giraffes.
It is believed that he lived around 97 million years ago in Australia with 2 other titanosaurs. This means that he lived in the late Cretaceous, in the last years of the dinosaur existence. Experts want to dig deeper in that area with the hope that maybe they find another dinosaur species or they learn more about known dinosaurs.
What is your opinion about this dinosaur species being discovered?
