BEACON TRANSCRIPT – After several videos circulated on the internet showing e-cigarettes exploding in people’s pockets or mouths, everybody became more concerned on the safety of this smoking technique. However, a new trend regarding e-cigarettes could represent a health hazard: dripping.
Dripping means pouring the e-cigarette liquid directly on the hot coils. This makes the users feel more intense flavors and stronger sensations. Now you may wonder, is this dripping technique safe?
It appears that it is not. Dropping the liquid directly on the hot coils generates a higher temperature than that occurring in traditional vaping. This leads to a higher emission of toxic chemicals, such as acetone, formaldehyde, and acetaldehyde.
These chemicals are very harmful, they can cause cancer and respiratory diseases, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
We should be aware of the dangers since this technique gradually increases in popularity. A study published in the journal Pediatrics shows that at least one in four teenagers embraced this harmful trend.
Suchitra Krishnan-Sarin, professor of psychiatry at the Yale University’s School of Medicine, is the lead author of the first study that analyzes comprehensive the expanse of the dripping technique among teens. For this study, they surveyed teens from eight high schools in Connecticut and discovered that 64 percent of them used dripping to obtain a thicker smoke, 35 percent for an intense flavor, and 28 percent for a better sensation.
Also, other reports show that teens are the main users of e-cigarettes. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention discovered that, since 2014, e-cigarette use has surpassed traditional cigarette use among teenagers, making e-cigarettes the most popular tobacco product for middle school students and high school students.
E-cigarette manufacturers seem to give less importance to this emerging phenomenon. Ray Story is the CEO of Tobacco Vapor Electronic Cigarette Association. He denounced the trend as rather insignificant and stated that the number of users who perform dripping regularly is small as compared to the users who vape in the traditional way.
He also said that the number of ‘drippers’ is rather small since this process requires quite a lot of DIY. There is a certain more refined technique that leads to the obtaining of huge clouds of smoke and many individuals might actually not be able to fashion their e-cigs in the sense.
Regardless of how expansive dripping may be, people should be aware of its dangers and know to what risks they expose themselves when using this smoking technique.
