Texas Teen Diagnosed with Potentially Deadly Muscle Disease after Over Exercising at the Gym

June 4, 2018 By Clayton Meason

gym day

Rhabdomyolysis is a muscle disease caused by traumatic injury and over-exercising.

BEACON TRANSCRIPT – Hitting the gym one too many times nearly killed a Houston teen. Several days after his last gym session, the teen was admitted to the hospital and diagnosed with a potentially deadly muscle disease as a result of over-exercising.

Muscle Disease Caused by Over Exercising, Doctors Reveal

Jared Shamburger is a 17-year-old boy from Houston whose passion for staying in shape nearly got him killed.

According to Shamburger’s family, Jared began to feel strange after his latest gym session. His symptoms included weakness, intense muscle pain, and swelling. As the symptoms did not subside, the boy was taken to the hospital.

There, he was diagnosed with Rhabdomyolysis, a potentially deadly disease, usually caused by injury or, in his case, over exercising.

As the ER doctors explained, Rhabdomyolysis weakens the muscle tissue and eventually causes it to break down.

Subsequently, the dying muscle releases a toxin into the bloodstream. In most cases, the toxin carried by the bloodstream can damage the kidneys, leading to kidney failure.

The doctors reveal that, in rare instances, the condition leads to the patient’s death.

Rhabdomyolysis is usually caused by traumatic injuries such as car accidents or falls.

Furthermore, studies revealed that this muscle disease could also be caused by electric shock injuries, snake venom, over-exercising, heat strokes or some type of metabolic disorder.

According to the available literature on the topic, Rhabdomyolysis is difficult to diagnose.

However, most physicians agree on the “classic triad” – decreased urinary output, dark or brown urine, pain, intense muscle pain in the lower back are, thigs, and shoulders.

Conclusion

As far as Shamburger is concerned, the 17-year-old is expected to make a complete recovery. More than that, teen’s doctors said that the young man went to the hospital just in the nick of time.

New, Handheld 3D Skin Printer to Be Used to Heal Deep Wounds? (Study)

May 9, 2018 By Angelina Stapp

Scientists have been working on a handheld 3D skin printer to help heal deep skin wounds.

BEACON TRANSCRIPT – A new handheld 3D skin printer could help cover up people’s wounds and become the next big thing in the treatment of patients with severe burns and deep wounds.

University of Toronto scientists developed this new machine. According to the, unlike a routine skin graft, it does not require skin to be removed from the patient’s body. Nor does this have to be donated by a skin donor.

The printer is unlike anything the medical world has seen so far. It weighs just two pounds and can reportedly deposit new skin tissue over skin wounds in under two minutes. These features make it super easy to use during surgery.

A paper presenting the new device is available in the journal Lab on a Chip.

The Advantages of a Handheld 3D Skin Printer

Typically, a patient with deep skin wounds is treated by a doctor using a split-thickness skin grafting technique. But sometimes, the wound damage goes very deep into the layers of the skin. This damage can cut right through the hypodermis, dermis, and epidermis layers of the skin.

When the wound is so deep and extensive, it can be hard to find high-quality donor skin. Or one that also matches the exact needs of the patients. This can leave parts of the skin uncovered and make it hard for it to heal. As such, it transforms the split-thickness skin grafting technique into a bit of a failure.

The University of Toronto’s handheld 3D skin printer can reportedly apply skin directly to the wound, just like ‘applying packing tape to a package’. The protein in the “fake” skin allows the skin to heal nicely as well. This can especially happen since the printer is able to manufacture skin that meets the patient’s specific needs.

So far, the printer has only been tested on pigs, but plans are in the works for it to be used on humans in the near future. The team at the University of Toronto also has plans to increase the size of the machine so that it can produce larger pieces of skin.

California Student Gets Diagnosed with Thumb-Sized Brain Tumor after Car Crash

March 21, 2018 By Gary Wymore

Car Crash Leads to Brain Tumor

Doctors claimed that the brain tumor could have killed the student in a couple of months if not for the car crash.

BEACON TRANSCRIPT – A Sacramento State University student says her life has completely changed after a minor car crash that occurred at the end of February. Following the accident, the 24-year-old woman discovered that she had a thumb-size brain tumor growing behind her right year. Brain surgery could result in complete memory loss, the California student declared.

Removal of Brain Tumor Could Result in Memory Loss, Doctors Claimed

Back in February, Aimee Greene, a 24-year-old Sacramento State University student, was driving on the highway when she lost control over her car, crashing her vehicle. Neither she nor Gianni Westlake, her boyfriend sustained severe injuries during the accident.

Aimee and Gianni were taken to the hospital to be treated for normal cuts and bruises. Since the California students told the doctors that the crash knocked her unconscious, they’ve insisted on a CT scan.

When the results came back, the doctors told Aimee that she had a benign brain tumor roughly the size of a thumb. According to the woman, the tumor kept growing behind her right ear for the past year and, if not for the crash, she would have passed away in a couple of months.

The benign brain tumor, also called a choroid plexus papilloma. This type of brain tumor is quite common in small children and teen but rare in adults.

A choroid plexus papilloma, albeit not malignant, can increase the pressure inside the skull by upping the production of cerebrospinal fluid.

Conclusion

Greene admitted that, for several years, she experienced terrible migraines and, at times seizures. With her doctor’s consent, Aimee has returned to her studies and hopes to get her social work degree in time for her surgery.

The California student explained that the tumor removal surgery can result in spatial memory and memory loss, this being the reason why she wants to finish her studies.

Irish Man Found with Large Air Pocket on Right Side of the Brain

March 14, 2018 By Gary Wymore

Air pocket in Man's Brain

Irish man had a 3.5-inch air pocket is his brain.

BEACON TRANSCRIPT – Following a routine trip to the doctor’s office, an 84-year-old man from Ireland discovered that most of the right side of his brain was missing and a large air pocket taking its place. The patient was in otherwise perfect health, save for weakness on his left side and unsteady walking.

Air Pocket Formed by Benign Bone Tumor, Doctors Revealed

Dr. Finlay Brown, one of the physicians involved in the Irish man’s case, declared that this is, by far, the largest formation of this kind ever to be recorded. The physician added that, in most cases, these air pockets called pneumocephalus, appear after brain surgery.

In the patient’s case, the condition was facilitated by an osteotoma, a benign bone tumor, which erodes his sinuses. Basically, every time the patient sneezed or a cough, tiny air bubble would travel to his brain, thus creating a pressurized air pocket.

According to Brown, the 84-year-old patient was in perfect health, with no history of smoking or drinking. The man came to the doctor’s office about weakness on his left side and because he took many a tumble because of his unsteady walk.

A CT scan revealed the pressurized air pocket where his right side of the brain should have been. Measurements revealed that the formation was at least 3.5 inches. Brown declared that his left-sided weakness was unrelated to the pneumocephalus but rather the side-effect of a minor brain stroke.

Conclusion

The patient needs two separate surgeries – one to get rid of the air pocket via decompression and another one to excise the bone tumor.

After 12 weeks of recovery, the 84-year-old was discharged from the hospital in good condition. Brown concluded his statement by declaring that the Irish man’s case was singular and it revealed much useful information about the condition.

Misdiagnosis in England Hospital Leads to Multiple Amputations

March 12, 2018 By Clayton Meason

Multiple amputations, Sepsis, England Mother

A woman from England claims that her multiple amputations could have been avoided if her doctors would have diagnosis her sepsis in time.

BEACON TRANSCRIPT – A 31-year-old from England intends to file a malpractice lawsuit against the Luton and Dunstable University Hospital after she lost both legs, her right hand, and all fingers on her left hand. The hospital’s board declared that the complications leading to multiple amputations could have been avoided if the staff followed procedures.

Sepsis After Miscarriage Led to Multiple Amputations

According to Magdalena Malec, a 31-year-old mother from England, her life took a very unfortunate turn after she found out that she’s pregnant for the third time. Malec, who’s a mother of three, recalls checking into the Luton and Dunstable University Hospital in December 2014 after experiencing a miscarriage.

After a brief consultation, the doctors sent the woman home with a painkillers prescription. The woman also had severe stomach cramps and internal bleeding.

A few weeks later, Malec would return to the same hospital after her symptoms intensified. During Malec’s second trip to the hospital, the doctors diagnosed her with an ectopic pregnancy and scheduled her for surgery.

Following the emergency session in the OR, Malec was informed that her kidneys failed and that she needed a transplant. A few days into her recovery, the England mother suffered ischemia of the limbs (improper blood circulation through the limbs), developing gangrenes on her legs and arms…

The woman was rushed again to the operating room, where the surgeons amputated both legs, her right hand, and all the finger on her left arm in an attempt to stop the infection from spreading.

According to the woman, the multiple amputations could have been avoided if the doctors placed the right diagnosis in the first place. The hospital’s board agreed with the woman’s claims and conveyed their most sincere apologies for what happened to Malec.

The woman told the reporters that she’s now learning how to cope with her pain and how to do things around the house with her prosthetics.

New Yorker to Sue NYPD for Leaving Mother to Perish in Fire

February 28, 2018 By Angelina Stapp

NYPD Under Fire

Woman whose mother died in Queens fire intends to sue the NYPD:

BEACON TRANSCRIPT – The NYPD has recently could face severe public backlash following the release of a 5-minute-long video depicting two officers abandoning an elderly woman in the hallway during a fire. Ethel Davis, the 91-year-old woman who perished in the fire, passed away due to prolonged smoke exposure. The victim’s daughter intends to file a lawsuit against the officers who carried her mother, the NYPD, and the city.

NYPD Officers Allegedly Ordered Woman to Leave Fireproofed Apartment

According to Ethel Davis’ daughter, on the 12th of February, the NYPD and the Fire Department evacuated the tenants of an apartment complex located in Queens after a fire broke out. The surveillance footage retrieved from the site depicts two NYPD officers standing in a hallway and directing tenants to the nearest exits.

Among those who should have been saved from the flames was 91-year-old Ethel Davis, mother of six children and grandmother to many more. According to the woman’s daughter, the two NYPD officers abusively forced her mother to leave the safety of her apartment, even though the door was fireproofed.

If one mistake wasn’t enough, according to Peter S. Thomas, the family’s attorney, while evacuating the residents, one of the two police officers opened the hallway door to the 11th floor, which made the fire spread even further.

The incriminating footage reveals that after telling the woman to leave the apartment, the officers went ahead to make sure the path was safe, as Ethel collapsed. Instead of picking up the elderly woman, the officers fled the scene.

After the firefighters managed to put out the fire, Ethel’s body was retrieved from the 11th floor. The coroner’s report ruled out that Ethel’s death was caused by smoke inhalation. Following the incident, Marcia, Ethel’s daughter, intends to sue the two NYPD officer, the Police Department, and the city.
