Beacon Transcript – Here, the German mapping company will be joining Mobileye in their quest to develop the digital maps that will guide self-driving cars.
Self-driving cars are not a new thing. Car and technology manufacturers have long since been working on such products. However, this year, self-driving vehicles took a front row seat. More and more companies have started testing such cars.
Street tests are already being carried out in the United States. And their developers are hoping that they will be hitting the streets on their own starting with 2017.
As such, Mobileye has set out to advance their development. More exactly, it means to equip them with accurate global maps.
In order to do so, it has recently entered a partnership with Here. This latter is a company currently co-owned by automotive companies. More exactly, the German car makers BMW, Daimler, and Audi.
Here provides data, service, and mapping technologies. Its products are used by the consumer, enterprise, and automotive sectors. Cloud computing models are the base for Here’s technology.
Mobileye is specialized in ADAS. These are advanced driver assistance systems. The Israeli-based technology company develops and advances such vision-based technology. ADAS are used in order to warn and prevent against mitigations and collisions.
Now, Here and Mobileye will be pairing their respective technologies. They are targeting the creation of an accurate, up-to-date global map. This would be used by self-driving or fully autonomous vehicles. It could also be utilized for location services.
The two companies are planning to develop a state-of-the-art HD global map. This could become the standard for future vehicles.
Edzard Overbeek, the Here CEO, went to release a statement. According to him, the company is excited to be working with Mobileye. He stated that the two share common views in regards to the automotive industry.
Location services and digital maps will be a vital element for the said industry. Such technology is already being used. However, their role in self-driving or autonomous cars will be higher.
Such vehicles would have to rely on digital maps. These would be their base for a safe and accurate navigation. Autonomous cars would access such information through data banks.
Mapping companies and services such as Here would become a vital part of the driving process. As would sensing technology companies such as Mobileye.
Some see this partnership as a very import step. Their collaboration could help advance the outreach of self-driving cars. It could potentially be one of the factors to ensure their success.
Mobileye is not at its first collaboration in the area. One of its previous partners was Tesla Motors. The two companies separated earlier this year, in September.
The two decided to put an end to their partnership after one of Tesla’s autopilots was involved in a fatal crash. Still, Tesla Motors was not their only partner.
Before Here, Mobileye also announced a partnership with BMW, one of their co-owners, and Intel. Mobileye has taken to providing BMW with the necessary technology. This will be used by the German automaker in its autonomous vehicles feet.
Mobileye will take to provide them with software and chips. As the company has announced the Here collaboration, it might also come to ensure their mapping system.
Intel will also be a part of the future BMW autonomous car program. It will reportedly be providing the necessary AI and machine learning programs. The company plans to introduce such technology by 2021.
