BEACON TRANSCRIPT – Global warming becomes more and more dangerous for our planet every day. One of the most serious effects of a higher global temperature is a higher sea level and a lower ice level at the Poles. NASA states that the ice level at both the North and the South Pole has been constantly decreasing over the past few years.
Global warming has terrible consequences
NASA warns us that global warming has terrible effects on the environment and we are in danger. The sea ice level at the North Pole reached its lowest point it had ever recorded during wintertime. Similarly, the Antarctic sea ice at the South Pole is at its maximum low. What does this mean?
These values were registered during the first weeks of March 2017. They came a bit as a surprise, as the sea ice levels in both Poles reached their maximum lows after a quite a long period of moderate expansion of the ice. This should work as a warning for everybody. We should understand that global warning can have terrible and perhaps irreversible consequences.
Reports show that the Arctic Circle usually registers its maximum sea ice level in March. Also, the minimum level of the ice is registered in September. The situation is the opposite in Antarctica, where the ice is at its peak in September, and the lowest in March.
This year’s maximum ice level lower than the previous level
However, the past winter had several factors which led to a significant decrease in the sea ice level. There were several storms which occurred, the winds were not favorable for the expansion of the ice, and global warming showed its claws as the overall temperatures were higher.
Researchers worryingly reported what they had noticed. At the Arctic Circle, the highest ice level was recorded on March 7th. It was a surface of 14.42 million square kilometers. Unfortunately, this was 97,000 square kilometers lower than the previously registered level. The situation is also serious for Antarctica. The minimum for this year was 815,000 square miles of ice. This is lower by 71,000 square miles than the previous lowest record.
The European Space Agency’s satellite CryoSat-2 also reported that the Arctic sea ice was way thinner this winter as compared to the past four winters. What is worrying is the fact that it discovered the area of ice that had been lost, and this area is bigger than Mexico. In a few years, the situation might get worse if we do not try to stop global warming.
