Despite the fact that the Millennials are the most educated generation up-to-date, that does not mean they’re also the wisest. The many crises they face, either through inheriting them from the baby boomers, either from creating them on their own, paint a bleak picture.
Because they are the demographic which is replacing baby boomers in term of spending power, political ambitions and social recognition, Millennials will have their say.
Many Millennials have pushed for lower oil prices. This generation does not want to be involved in companies which have to do with the oil industry. It is seen as dirty and greedy – which is true to some extent.
Lifelong jobs are not what they used to, for Millennials. They would rather hop on and off jobs, which makes it difficult for the industry to find a stable, skilled labor force.
Millennials seem to have an obsession over green issues, so they don’t like to invest in industries that go against their core philosophy. They also tend not to be as brand loyal as other generations, so any mistake on a major company’s side could mean that Millennials organize and bring it down (peacefully, of course).
Millennials would rather be online than watch television, and especially hate TV ads. They have a range of tools which help them sift through programs: Apple TV, Netflix or Hulu.
This generation is also political, but only if it’s passionate about it. Voting is not for them, as it is not digitized. Reaching out to the Millennials is difficult, although it has been attempted in this presidential campaign by both candidates.
Market players who want to get the Millennials on their side are supposed to be standing out for the right causes. Or is it the causes “du jour”?
While some say we are dealing with crises of self-absorption and destructiveness, others lighten the tone and believe that in the end, Millennials will repair their reputation somehow.
Millennials are defined by anti-consumerist lifestyles and can go to great lengths not to be perceived as successful. Many despise owning stuff.
