BEACON TRANSCRIPT – According to a report released by the CDC, more people claim to be bisexual among Americans, especially women who are three times more likely to be bisexual than men.
Since the gay community has been gaining more sympathy and although there are still controversies, they managed to gain more rights, people are less reluctant to talk about their sexual preferences.
The CDC interviewed 9,000 adults who were 18 to 44 years old. 2 percent of men stated they were bisexual, while 5.5 percent of women stated the same. Since the last time such a survey was taken, the percentage of bisexual women increased by 40 percent.
Also, a general sexual attraction shift is taking place as more people are not attracted to the opposite sex only. While in the past, at least 90% of the people interviewed were attracted to the opposite sex only, now the figures have declined to almost 76 percent of women and 88 percent of men.
Now, this doesn’t necessarily mean that more people are bisexual but it rather means that more people feel more liberated to identify themselves as not being straight. This indicates a change of mentality rather than one of behavior. More people, especially women feel freer to express their sexual preferences without fear of being judged.
Looking at the matter from the age point of view, the greatest percent of women identifying themselves as bisexual was among the ones between the ages of 18 to 24. Only 5.4 percent of women between 25 and 34 years old were bisexual and 4 percent of women over 34 declared the same sexual preference. When it comes to men, the bisexual identifiers also decline with the increase of age.
Apparently, in the past decade, more women admitted to have had sexual intercourse with people of the same sex, compared to men. However, most of them have declared themselves to be bisexual rather than lesbian.
All in all, we might be seeing a slight change in sexual preferences and the will of people to expose this. Women feel more free now to talk about their sexuality and although same-sex relationships are still not accepted by everyone, the society is slowly moving towards tolerance to say the least.
