The results of a new study emerged today, which shows that nail polish contains a chemical that affects hormones.
The study was simple enough. Participant women were asked to paint their fingernails and then have some tests run on their bodies. These tests show how 8 of the 10 nail polishes tested contained a chemical called TPHP or triphenyl phosphate. The same chemical is used in the manufacturing of plastics, which raises quite a concern.
The effects that this phosphate has relate to the endocrine system, meaning that it affects the normal hormonal process. This, in turn, can lead to reproductive problems, as it has been shown by some studies done on animals regarding the same chemical.
It is evident enough that the dangerous component makes its way towards the body via the common and much used nail polish. Also, as it turns out, almost half of the nail polishes out there have TPHP among their list of ingredients. Researchers have tested 3000 different brands of nail polish.
They have also discovered that some brands use the chemical in the process of making the polish and it is very much present in the final product on the shelves, but they don’t list it on the package. This means consumers are misinformed as to what they are putting into their bodies.
The research come to us from the people at Duke University and the Environmental Working Group and it says that TPHP is commonly used as a fire retardant in furniture and a hardening solution in furniture making. This fact alone makes manicures and pedicures a scary process to go through.
Even scarier is the fact that nail polish is one the most used beauty products in the world. Also, women tend to use it and wear it every single day, for most of their lives, years on end. The effects could be devastating, just on this premise alone.
Another disturbing fact found by the authors of the study, is just how quickly the body absorbs the chemicals. It is just a matter of hours, after applying a single coat of nail polish. Unfortunately, some very big brands seem to commercialize nail polish with TPHP in it, such as: Maybelline, Revlon, The Balm, Orly, OPI, Sally Hensen, Nuance by Salma Hayek and Beauty Without Cruelty.
A complete list of all the brands selling this kind of product can be found on EWG’s Skin Deep page.
