BEACON TRANSCRIPT – With the new Star Wars movie premiere approaching, everyone is getting excited and even NASA talks about Death Star.
The Star Wars universe is very interesting and has raised a lot of questions over the years. Yes, some of the things we see in the movies don’t seem so out of this world anymore, as technology has advanced. So what we call science-fiction has started to lose the ‘fiction’ part and become more realistic as time passes by. However, some of the objects in Star Wars, fantastic as they may seem can be created and in a much easier way.
NASA engineer, Brian Muirhead, talks about how a Death Star can and should be built. The Death Star in the movie was actually built from scratch, but things can be made easier if an already existing asteroid is used. Think about it. Instead of transporting all sorts of metals and other necessary things such as water, you will already have them up there. The asteroid can provide metal, water and organic compounds so you can actually make a life there.
Imagine having your own Death Star to live on. Unfortunately, although the NASA engineer makes it sound so simple, indeed a lot simpler than the Death Star in Star Wars, building such a ‘home’ would still take a lot of time, effort and of course, money.
Muirhead is the chief engineer of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and is now working on an asteroid redirect mission. Their plan is to land on an asteroid, take a piece of it and place it in the moon’s orbit. After that they will be collecting samples while the asteroid floats around the moon. Although this might not sound as interesting as the Death Star, the chances of this guy building one are far higher than other mortal’s.
With this explained, it could now be easier for us to understand how things work in the Star Wars universe despite the fact that it will probably still amaze us with technology and special effects. All in all, from simple Star Wars fans to NASA engineers who actually know what this is about, everyone is looking forward to the movie premiere.
