BEACON TRANSCRIPT – After a few weeks of teasing that had fans making all kinds of speculations, Blizzard revealed the new Overwatch hero. She is Orisa, a robot giant built by the child genius Efi Oladele who upgraded an older model of Omnic to protect her home.
The initial teaser presented only Efi, which made some of the fans think that the new hero might be the child herself. However, many guessed that it was going to be something she created.
Orisa is based on the model OR-15, which makes her choice of name quite clever. She is going to be a tank hero, joining Reinhardt, Zarya, Winston, Roadhog, and D.Va.
Blizzard released two videos concerning the new character, a short lore one, and a longer one where Jeff Kaplan explains the conceptual development of Orisa and how the design team had to face a visual challenge when creating a female giant robot monster. They wanted to make her similar to Reinhardt, and opposed to the more disruptive tanks like Winston and D.Va.
Here are a few of Orisa’s special features. First of all, there is the Fusion Drive. This is a machine gun that uses projectiles, and Orisa moves slower while operating it. This weapon should have a wider range than any other tank weapon.
The Alt-Fire for Fusion Drive works like a mini gravitation surge than can help her reposition the targets. By using Fortify, she can become immune to crowd control. Also, she has a Protective Barrier that resembles Winston’s shield.
Probably the most interesting item in Orisa’s kit is the Supercharger. This item placed on her back resembles a drum and it can damage anyone around when she drops it on the ground. However, pay attention to lurking enemies, since they can kill the item.
Unfortunately, unlike other tank champions, Orisa has no movement skills. She is only meant to protect herself and the others around, which is basically what tanks are meant to do.
Orisa is exciting mainly because she is a ‘true’ new character. Other Overwatch heroes recently introduced as new are actually from older teams, but Efi created Orisa from scratch, and this is something that we have not seen before in other characters.
You can already test Orisa on the PTR, but she is bound to enter the game after a few weeks of testing.
