BEACON TRANSCRIPT – A team of medical researchers from Spain has discovered that tailored acupuncture session can actually help patients suffering from fibromyalgia or other back pains. The small-scale clinical trial demonstrated that personalized acupuncture session can help fibromyalgia patients more than fake acupuncture sessions.
For some time now, patients suffering from chronic pain, especially those with back pains, have turned their attention towards Eastern Medicine. In traditional Chinese Medicine, there are many medical treatises which teach physicians that acupuncture is a great pain relief.
And to tell the truth, it is something better so seek alternative solutions to a problem such as back pains, rather than getting yourself pumped with drugs. According to a recent study, it would seem that these alternative therapies are really great as painkillers especially for patients suffering from fibromyalgia.
Much more severe than a simple backache, fibromyalgia is a disorder mainly characterized by a widespread of pain throughout your body. The main symptoms associated with fibromyalgia are muscle pains, fatigue, sleep issue, memory issues, bowel problems, and mood swings.
Approximately 5.8 million US citizens are diagnosed each year with this disease, which, unfortunately, does not have a treatment. The best way to counter fibromyalgia is through relation, rigorous physical exercises, and stress-relief therapies.
To our disdain, the researchers have yet to figure out what’s causing fibromyalgia, but most of them agree that the situation occurs when an unknown stimulus tampers with the brain’s way of handling pain-related signals.
The study performed by the Dona Mercedes Primary Health Center proved that personalized acupuncture sessions can help fibromyalgia patients and that we still have a lot to learn from Eastern Traditional Medicine.
Still, the subject of acupuncture remains somewhat of a controversy. While the health benefits are there, beyond any doubt, most of us still ponder on who we should trust when it comes to acupuncture. A small footnote for those who are seeking the benefits of Traditional Chinese Medicine: search only for authorized practitioners, or better yet, ask around your local hospital. There are many doctors who are fully capable of conducting acupuncture session.
The procedure is quite risky and if it is not performed by a specialist, the patient could end up paralyzed.
Now, the study from Spain proved that patients receiving personalized session can benefit much longer from the soothing effects of acupuncture than those receiving bogus treatments.
In order to compare the two methods, the team enlisted approximately 164 patients suffering from fibromyalgia. The clinical study spanned over a period of nine weeks. First, the patients were divided into two groups. The first group received a 20-minute tailored session of acupuncture while the second group received fake acupuncture each week.
At the end of week nine, the doctors assessed the levels of pain felt by the patients. It would seem that the group who received the personalized treatment felt a 41 percent pain relief after the 10-week session, and 19 percent relief after the first year.
Meanwhile, the patients who received the bogus treatment felt 27 percent pain release after week 10, and 9 percent relief after the first year.
