Sony’s PlayStation Network was down again on July 14, and gamers took out their frustrations onto social media websites about yet another interruption in the gaming network service. This downtime restricted gamers from being able to access online games, the trophy system, the online store, and the messages from users and other apps which need online access.
Sony gave a statement in which they said that the PlayStation Network was down because it needed maintenance. Having said that, the company did not warn people about a downtime because of maintenance, which raised some valid questions regarding the real reason why Sony’s online service was down.
Sony said on the PlayStation Network status page that users may have trouble launching applications, games and other social features like messaging, friends list and trophies. They added that the company appreciates the patience of its users while it fixes this issue.
Other messages released by Sony revealed that there were some ongoing problems in the PlayStation Store and the unlimited video service offered by the company. The PlayStation Network claimed that all the services were functioning properly but complaints about service interruptions were still coming in from gamers everywhere.
Lizard Squad said it brought down Sony’s network last year during an attack which was responsible for services being shut down during the holiday season. While the recent experience with the PlayStation Network isn’t nearly as big as what happened then, it’s obvious that the network regularly faces issues and these kinds of problems are frustrating gamers and deny them the ability to play their games on Sony’s online network.
In July alone, the company’s network has already faced a number of service downtimes before this one. There were numerous downtimes that took place between July 3 and 5. These problems are part of the reason why users on the PlayStation Network have launched the initiative called Better PSN. The initiative gathers suggestions from the users of Sony’s services regarding what could be done in order to improve the network.
On top of wishes to eliminate the constant downtimes which occur on the PlayStation Network, other improvements that were requested by the gamers include enhancements on the user profile page, an increase in cloud storage, the release of customization tools and uninterrupted multiplayer.
However, the Better PSN campaign hasn’t been acknowledged by Sony at the current time through any official statement given by the company.
