BEACON TRANSCRIPT – Looking for the perfect gift for Valentine’s Day? Then forget about diamonds, rubies or emeralds, and try out one of this precious minerals. As of today, rare minerals are a girl’s best friend, given the fact that they are indeed very rare and they give off quite a luster.
There’s actually no pertinent study out there to suggest that women want rare stones for Valentine’s Day. In fact, the whole idea started with a joke, perpetrated by Robert Hazen, the co-author of a new mineralogy study.
The study in question can be viewed as a sort of breakthrough in the field of mineralogy. Hazen and his team of scientists have managed to find and catalogue no less than 2500 obscure minerals, each of them harder to find than the other. Moreover, the team of scientists has noted that the newly discovered minerals have all sorts of applications. For instance, some of these minerals can be used in order to fashion electronics or batteries, while other can be used to manufacture fancy jewels for the ladies.
Among the list of precious minerals found by the team are fingerite, amicite, ichnusaite and nevadaite. All of these minerals are very rare, and according to the team of scientists can only form under unusual conditions.
For example, ichunusite can only form in the presence of thorium and molybdenum, two very rare minerals. Moreover, over the years, only a handful of ichunusite deposits have been found.
As noted by Hazen, diamonds and other precious stones have become quite common, since there are many ways in which you can synthesize those using artificial means. If you really want to surprise your significant other, go ahead and buy her a Sardinian Ichunusite. According to the team of scientists, only one solid piece was ever retrieved, making the jewel worth a lot of cash.
Rare minerals are a girl’s best friend and the best gift for the best Valentine’s Day. On another note, it would seem that these rare minerals are formed under very unusual conditions. In their study, the researchers noted that a mineral such as ichunusite forms from rare elements found beneath the crust. Other precious minerals are so volatile, that they can disappear in a few seconds after birth.
And there are those minerals who only form in the most dangerous places on Earth, like volcanoes. Concerning the distribution of minerals, it would seem that that 5090 minerals have been discovered until now. Out of those 5090, only 100 of them are used in order to form the crust of the Earth. Moreover, most of them have in common elements such as oxygen, aluminum and silicone.
