BEACON TRANSCRIPT – Elizabeth Gilreath, an 11-year-old girl from Omaha, Nebraska got her scalp ripped off during a carnival ride and her eyes suffered damage. A year after the traumatic event, the girl gathered the courage to speak about what happened and to look ahead with hope.
Elizabeth or, like her parents and friends call her, Lulu, just wanted to have fun and enjoy a carnival ride. No one could have expected that such an accident could happen. Her hair got caught in the machine, so the mechanism ripped her scalp off her head. If this was not enough, her eyes were damaged, too.
Lulu had to undergo numerous surgeries
The girl has no recollection of what happened, she just remembers how she woke up at the hospital. Over one year’s period, she underwent two head and one eye surgery, three skin grafts, and an overwhelming number of 28 blood transfusions.
One year after the ride, she gathered the strength to talk about the event. Right now, Lulu is struggling with an infection, but her condition improved greatly. She gives everybody a lesson through the declaration she made. She said that her scars did not define her, and she thought that nobody should have this opinion.
There is no use to mention that she suffered a shock. Everything that she remembers before waking up in the hospital was slipping in the seat at the carnival. After suffering several surgeries, she had her first glimpse of her head in quite a sudden manner, as the hospital personnel forgot one day to cover the mirrors in her bathroom.
The girl has the power to remain strong
Despite all this, she stays strong and has the power to smile. Her hair even started growing on one half of her head. Lulu is proud that, right now, she can pull it up in a ponytail. This should teach everybody a lesson. Even after living such traumatic events, she remains positive and enjoys the good things that happen in her life.
Her mother, Virginia Cooksey, posted regular updates on Facebook on her daughter’s state. Although her health improved, she is still not recovered completely. The woman sued the company which organized the carnival, as well as the state, and accused them of negligence.
Elizabeth might recover one day, but her life will never be the same again. Her first carnival ride turned into her worst nightmare, and left her scarred for life.
