BEACON TRANSCRIPT – During a routine inspection, skimming devices were discovered in Safeway stores.
Several financial institutions have been following a network of credit card frauds that involve a few Safeway stores. Authorities warn customers that they should be vigilant when using their cards and that they might opt to for credit monitoring.
Safeway has revealed that two skimming devices were found in its stores: one in Dublin and one in Walnut Creek. Upon discovery, they immediately notified the authorities and the banks about the find in order to minimize customer impact.
These devices steal the credit card details – card and pin numbers – which the thieves then use to replicate the credit cards and withdraw money.
The devices were fortunately found before they could manage to do any damage.
They are thought to have been installed in early November. A threat was reported Wednesday on the “Krebs on security” blog and was confirmed afterwards by Safeway. The security breach was confirmed on Wednesday by representatives.
They say that whenever they come across criminal activity in their stores, they are quickly able to find out with precision the moment that the devices were installed and to establish how many transactions were made.
They also do routine checks on all of their devices to discover if they have been tampered with. This particular case is treated with the utmost seriousness and the staff is working with the police to help apprehend the wrong-doers.
In the meantime, the police warn the public that they should be aware of the danger. They say that they could greatly benefit from credit monitoring services, which lets them know within minutes if a purchase has been made with their credit card.
They also say that it would be wiser to use credit cards, at least for the time being, instead of ATMs, because withdrawals made on the latter are faster and irreversible.
Customers who have had their credit card numbers stolen say that their bank accounts were completely emptied.
Safeway is an American supermarket chain with over 2,200 stores and 250,000 employees. It is the second biggest chain in America after The Kroger Company.
