Child Suffers Severe Brain Damage after Visiting Dentist

March 12, 2016 By Clayton Meason

"Child Suffers Severe Brain Damage after Visiting Dentist"

A 4-year-old from Houston suffered extensive brain damage after a trip to the dentist.

BEACON TRANSCRIPT – A 4-year-old from Houston is currently unable to speak nor to walk after visiting a dentist to undergo a surgical procedure. Nevaeh Hall has suffered extensive brain damage after being kept under sedatives for more than 7 hours.

Courissa Clark, Nevaeh’s mother, declared that she took her daughter for the third time to see Doctor Bethaniel Jefferson at the Diamond Dental clinic. During the surgical intervention, which according to the authorities, shouldn’t have lasted more than a couple of hours, the 4-year-old suffered multiple seizures.

Moreover, during the said procedure, the little girl was restrained by a commonly-used medical device called a papoose. This method is mainly used to ensure that the patient doesn’t tamper with the surgical field.

According to the Texas Board of Dental Examiners, the operation should have been over in a couple of hours and that Jefferson didn’t need to use the medical restraint.

Misses Clark said that during the procedure, she and her husband were sitting in the waiting room, patiently waiting for the doctor to finish the procedure.

Seven hours later, Doctor Bethaniel, upon exiting the room, said that their daughter experienced a couple of shakes during the procedure and that there is no need for concern.

Naturally, the couple rushed the child to the nearest hospital for a full examination. There, the doctors told the couple that her daughter suffered massive brain damage and that her chances of recovery are slim at best.

Two months have passed since the incident, and Nevaeh can’t speak, walk or stand up straight. Enraged by this event, Clarissa decided to sue Doctor Bethaniel Jefferson for his negligence.

Jim Morrison, Clarissa’s attorney, declared that the procedure physically and chemically suffocated the child and that the doctor should pay the price of his incompetence.

According to Morrison, on the day of the intervention, Doctor Bethaniel Jefferson, kept Nevaeh under sedation for more than 7 hours. Moreover, the doctor used no less than five doses of sedative in order to keep the 4-year-old under.

The Texas Board of Medical Examiners reconvened on the 20th of January in order to discuss Bethaniel’s case. Meanwhile, the doctor’s practicing license has been suspended and, depending on the board’s decision, Bethaniel could get away with a warning or with his right to practice revoked.

Morrison and the Board also declared that this is not the first time Doctor Jefferson stepped over the line. The doctor has been suspended before after endangering a patient’s life.

Many Children from the UK Need Dental Surgery

February 27, 2016 By Angelina Stapp

"Many Children from the UK Need Dental Surgery"

Thousands of children from Great Britain require dental surgery for tooth decay.

BEACON TRANSCRIPT – Tooth decay seems to have become one of the major issues in Great Britain. According to a new survey conducted by the Royal College of surgeons, the rate of tooth decay among young children has spiked by 9.81 percent over a period of 4 years. Thus, many children from the UK need dental surgery for an issue that is 90 percent of the time preventable.

A newly released study, pooling data from the Health and Social Care Information Center, has revealed that tens of thousands of children had tooth removal surgery over the last 4 years. More specifically, the study shows that from 2011, approximately 128.558 children were admitted to various dental clinics in order to have their teeth removed.

The study also suggests that the culprit, in this case, is tooth decay. Moreover, between April 2014 and March 2015, the dental surgeons handled over 14.445 cases of severe tooth decay. Unfortunately, as preventable as tooth decay is if the condition is far too advanced, the only known treatment is a dental extraction.

Although it sounds pretty painful, it’s a necessary evil, especially in the case of young children. Some would argue that our smile is the best business card we could offer. And that’s why it is important to visit our dentist at least once a year.

Statistically speaking, from 2011 until 2015, the dental surgeons managed to treat over 128.000 children, aged ten or under, with tooth decay. Moreover over, between 2014 and 2015, the doctors oversaw the treatment of 14.445 cases of tooth decay for children under 5 years old. Six to 10-year olds amassed to 19.336 cases.

The overall situation is dire indeed if we took a closer look. It would seem that during 2011 and 2012, approximately 30.761 children were treated for tooth decay. In the following interval (2012-2013), 31.275 children were subjected to dental surgery. In 2013 and 2014, the doctors treated no less than 32.741 cases of tooth decay, followed by 2015 with 33.781.

Professor Nigel Hunt, the Dean of Stomatology, from the Royal College of Surgeons, declared that the tooth decay rate has gone up by 9.81 percent in just 4 years. Moreover, the Dean of Stomatology also declared that the situation is appalling, taking into account the fact the tooth decay is 90 percent of the time preventable.

Furthermore, he also stated that the Government and dental associations must come up with new strategies in order to raise awareness among parents. The overall situation suggests that many children from the UK need dental surgery for a situation that could have been prevented in the first place.

Doctors Operated on the Wrong Baby after Pre-Op Mix-up

February 12, 2016 By Angelina Stapp

"Doctors Operated on the Wrong Baby after Pre-Op Mix-up "

A family from Tennessee wants to file a lawsuit against the surgeons who performed unneeded surgery on their child.

BEACON TRANSCRIPT – No one said that a doctor’s life is in an easy one when you literally spend half your life in training and the other half catching up with the latest trends in disease. And, eventually, this tight schedule can take its toll on you. Perhaps it was fatigue or sheer carelessness, but the facts remain the same. The doctors operated on the wrong baby after pre-op mix-up.

A couple from Tennessee is on the verge of filed a full-fledged malpractice lawsuit against the doctors in charge of their son’s case. According to Jennifer Melton, Nate’s mother, and the child involved in this unfortunate case, she and her husband, Domonique Harper, brought in their son for a routine consultation. Little did they knew about what was about to happen.

According to the mother’s testimony, the day after Nate was born, the doctors decided to submit the type to major surgery. However, the procedure was meant for another child, one who was suffering from a congenital defect.

The procedure in question is called a frenectomy or tongue clipping. In some cases, the tissue connecting the mouth and the tongue (lingual frenulum) can be too tight. Usually, if this connective tissue is too tight, the child might have a problem eating and speaking. Furthermore, the birth defect could induce discomfort in mother while breastfeeding.

Basically, during this procedure, the lingual frenulum is either surgically removed or repositioned, as to offer the patient’s tongue a freer degree of movement. In most cases, the procedure is painless, and it can even be performed without the need for general anesthesia. For this end, the surgeons often employ the use of a high-powered laser, which is capable of making precise incisions.

But, in some cases, the doctors need to do some major reconstructions in order to correct the birth defect.

The doctors operated on the wrong baby after pre-op mix-up. Both parents cannot explain why their baby had to the subjected to this kind of surgical procedure, given the fact that the baby’s tongue was perfectly normal, thus not needing reconstructive surgery.

All the events in questions have transpired at the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughter in Tennessee. Moreover, the enraged mother also declared that she and her husband had not been consulted on the procedure.

Presently, we cannot but speculate on the baby’s general conditions. However, concerning the mix-up mishap, it would seem that the hospital’s board will be questioned regarding the necessity of the surgical intervention.

Clint Kelly, the family’s lawyer, said that the conduct is inexcusable and that the guilty parties will face some severe charges.
