College traditions are supposed to bond colleagues and bring them together through entertaining activities. Yet, 30 cadets were injured during the Annual West Point pillow fight tradition.
The US Military Unit from New York, West Point, has made a tradition of throwing a pillow fight every year on August 20, to celebrate the successful graduation of summer training programs. While the previous occasions have been delightful for recruits and trainers alike, this year the pillow fight escalated to a genuine war battle.
The event came to a halt when ambulances had to make their way to collect injured cadets. And there were many of them. According to doctors’ declarations more than 30 individual presented head, arms and leg concussions. The majority of the students had to be taken to the hospital to have their broken legs and necks properly bandaged and recovered.
Images speak for themselves and we can clearly see that the scene was filled with blood and the once white pillows were now covered in blood stains. When asked about it, nobody really knew what caused the tradition to become a regular fight. Police officers, however, discovered that almost all students had army helmets and heavy objects hidden in their pillows.
According to Lieutenant Colonel Christopher Kasker, the culprits will be held responsible for their acts. New measures will be enacted to prevent cadets from behaving so recklessly again in the future, he reassures.
The unfortunate event will, nevertheless, not affect the US Military Unit’s pillow fight tradition, Kasker has stated. In his opinion, this event is an attempt to bring recruits together and to reinforce friendship between them. As a consequence, it cannot be abandoned simply because some students decided to make a bad joke this year.
The West Point military facility is one of the most renowned units on the territory of the United States. It is regarded as an authority due to the training program that cadets have to follow.
