BEACON TRANSCRIPT – Although obesity can be dangerous, some people think it doesn’t equal sickness, but according to scientists there is no such thing as fat and healthy.
People consider there are two main differences between a fat person’s lifestyle and a slim person’s lifestyle: food and sports. It seems only logical that a slim person is slim because he or she is careful of what they eat and they also exercise. On the other hand, it is believed that fat people eat a lot and usually unhealthy food and are very passive, not exercising at all.
Of course, the statements above are pure misconceptions or stereotypes as it is quite clear there are many fat people who exercise and follow healthy diets and many slim people who eat a lot of junk food and are couch potatoes.
However, according to scientists, regardless of the healthy life they may lead, obese people still have a higher risk of early death than slim people. The study was conducted by a team of Swedish researchers on over 1 million Swedish men. The study took place from 1969 to 1996 and the participants were followed from the age of 18 to the date of death or until the study ended. The findings showed that from the obese people, the ones who were doing more aerobics were 48 percent less likely to die early than the ones who didn’t do as much aerobics. However, men with an average weight had a lower risk of early death compared to the obese men, regardless of their fitness level.
Therefore, we can draw the conclusion that no matter how physically active an obese person is, he or she will still die earlier than a person of average weight, even if that person is physically passive.
Although fitness could indeed help an obese person, if the level of obesity is very high, there’s only that much that fitness can do. This happens because obesity is also linked to genetics. And until now, although with the CRISPR finding there is some hope, we cannot take control over our genes.
All in all, if you’re having weight problems, you should indeed exercise and eat healthy and have an overall healthy lifestyle, because it will help you reduce your problem and it will make you feel better, regardless of your genetic structure.
