BEACON TRANSCRIPT– The U.S government is going to be sued for the fact that the bison is getting killed inside a reservation. The fact that they are killed means that they face extinction sooner than expected.
The wish of the advocates of the wildlife is that the government takes another look at these animals, in order to make sure that they are not in danger. The lawsuit was filed by Buffalo Field Campaign, Friends of Animals and Western Watersheds Project. They are all complaining that the bisons are getting killed and nobody does anything about it.
The bison was named the national mammal this year. In the 19th century, they were killed until they were almost extinct. This is why it is so important for the U.S to protect the animal. Since nobody cared for the bison some non-governmental organizations decided to make this first step.
At this moment the species has only 4,900 remaining members on the U.S territory and these last remaining animals need protection.
This is not the first time someone requested that the bisons were taken under better care, two other petitions were filed this year and got rejected by the Fish and Wildlife Service. The motive for which the petitions were rejected was that the bison population is stable and even shows signs of growing and that is why they don’t need protection.
The Interagency Bison Management Plan even hunts and kills animals that are outside the reservation in order to have a population of 3,000.
Mike Harris, the wildlife law program director of Friends of Animals believes that it is a low number and that the animals won’t survive if they don’t have a bigger number.
He thinks that is better if the population is bigger and spreads across the country, so that if there is a problem with some of the animals, they would have enough members to not face extinction.
The wildlife protectors want to have the petition accepted so that the animals listed as threatened or endangered.
The biologists that are responsible for the reservation think that the number is enough and that the animals have a growing population since 1970 when they had only 500 animals at the reservation.
What is your opinion about the bison? Do you think that they face extinction?
