Beacon Transcript – Researchers from Hungary have just proved that your dog’s memory is better that you think. The study showed that dogs can remember a lot of things, not only objects and commands, like many of us believed.
It is normal for a person to remember certain events and situation. Apparently, the same situation applies to dogs, too. This is known as episodic memory. Humans, compared to animals, also have semantic memory, the ability to remember general knowledge which was learned over the years. The only animals that are known for using semantic memory are dogs.
This new study showed that a dog’s memory is much more complex than we believed. The researchers managed to prove that dogs might also have episodic memory. There are previous studies which showed that only some animals have episodic memory including rats, monkeys, and birds.
In order to conduct this study, researchers trained 17 dogs. They had a special training designed for these pets. They used the method “do as I do”. This method consists in making an animal do what the owner is doing. For example, the owner touches a chair and it tells the pet to do the same. After that, the dog repeats the action.
After the dogs were used with this type of training the researchers changed the order of things and they told the dogs to sit instead of performing the same action. After that researchers changed the game again. After they performed the action the dogs sat down and the researchers told them to repeat the action. Dogs remembered exactly what to do.
After the game was changed several times, more than 30% of the dogs remembered the commands and started to repeat the action of the researchers. Of course, there are some specialists who are skeptical about this study. Some of them mentioned that this study doesn’t prove that the dog’s memory is better just that they learn really easy.
The authors of this study mentioned that this is a new piece of evidence that should be taken into consideration. They also said that they need to make more studies in order to prove that dogs really have episodic memory.
What is your opinion about this study? Do you think that a dog’s memory is almost as good as that of a human?
