Some ingredients in supplements cause more harm than offer benefits.

BEACON TRANSCRIPT – Consumer Reports identified 15 ingredients in supplements that may harm the user more than the supplements aid him or her. The risks tied with these substances include cardiac arrest, organ damage, and cancer. However, some factors determine the severity of the side effects.

Most of the ingredients listed by Consumer Reports are known to interact with both over-the-counter and prescription medications. For example, warfarin or aspirin administered in tandem with some of the below-mentioned substances can give birth to additional health problems.

Furthermore, experts believe that there is no benefit provided by the supplements that could counteract the possible side effects.

Here are the top 15 ingredients in supplements that, according to experts, should be avoided at all costs.

Aconite is one of the avoidable ingredients in supplements

Aconite, or wolfsbane is also used in the cosmetic industry.

Aconite

Other names: Aconiti tuber, angustifolium, radix aconitum, or wolfsbane.

Used for: Joint pain, gout, and inflammation.

Risks: Vomiting, nausea, paralysis, weakness, heart and breathing problems, and even possibly death.

Caffeine Powder

Other names: 1,3,7 – trimethylxanthine

Used for: Enhanced athletic performance, improved attention, and weight loss.

Risks: Hearth arrhythmia, seizures, cardiac arrest, and even possible death.

Special warning: Caffeine powder is even more dangerous when it is combined with other types of stimulants like energy drinks.

Chaparral

Other names: Creosote bush, larrea divaricate, greasewood, larrea tridentate, and larreastat.

Used for: Inflammation, weight loss, colds, skin rashes, infections, and cancer.

Risks: Liver damage, kidney problems, and even death.

Coltsfoot

Other names: Farfarae folium leaf, coughwort, tussilago, foalswort, and farfara.

Used for: Relieving cough, laryngitis, sore throat, asthma, and bronchitis.

Risks: Liver damage and even carcinogenic tumors.

comfrey flower

Comfrey extract is believed to alleviate menstrual cramps.

Comfrey

Other names: Bruisewort, blackwort, slippery root, and symphytum officinale.

Used for: Relieving cough, stomach problems, heavy menstrual periods, chest pains, and some types of cancer.

Risks: Liver damage, cancer, and even death.

Germander

Other names: Chamaedrys, teucrium, and viscidum.

Used for: Alleviating fever, weight loss, gout, arthritis, and stomach problems.

Risks: Hepatitis, liver damage, and even death.

Greater Celandine

Other names: Celandine, chelidonii berba, and chelidonium majus.

Used for: Stomach aches.

Risks: Liver damage.

green tea

Green tea is filled with antioxidants, however the concentrated extract can prove to be dangerous.

Other names: Camelia sinensis

Used for: Weight loss

Risks: Tinnitus, dizziness, reduced iron absorption, exacerbates glaucoma and anemia, liver damage, elevates heart rate and blood pressure, possibly even death.

Kava

Other names: Kava kava, Ava pepper, and piper methysticum.

Used for: Insomnia and anxiety.

Risks: Liver damage, depression, exacerbates Parkinson’s, impairs driving, even death.

Lobelia

Other names: Lobelia inflata, asthma weed, wild tobacco, and vomit wort.

Used for: Smoking cessation treatment, improving respiratory difficulties.

Risks: Vomiting, nausea, tremors, diarrhea, confusion, rapid heartbeat, hypothermia, seizures, coma, and possibly death.

Methylsynephrine

Other names: P-hydroxyephedrine, 4-HMP, oxyephedrine, and oxilofrine.

Used for: Increasing energy, weight loss, and improving athletic performance.

Risks: Heart rate and rhythm abnormalities and cardiac.

Special warning: Could be fatal when combined with other stimulants.

mentha pulegium

Mentha pulegium usually grows around water sources.

Pennyroyal Oil

Other names: Hedeoma pulegioides and mentha pulegium

Used for: Breathing problems and digestive disorders.

Risks: Kidney and liver failure, convulsions, nerve damage, and even death.

Red Yeast Rice

Other names: Monascus purpureus

Used for: Heart disease, lowering LDL.

Risks: Muscle and kidney problems, hair loss, liver problems, magnifying the effects of statin drugs, increasing side effect risks.

Usnic Acid

Other names: Tree moss, bear moss, and usnea.

Used for: Pain relief and weight loss.

Risks: Liver injury.

Yohimbe

Other names: Pausinystalia yohimbe, johimbi, coryanthe johimbi, and yohimbine

Used for: Erectile dysfunction, low libido, obesity, and depression.

Risks: Elevated blood pressure, rapid heart rate, seizures, headaches, kidney and liver problems, panic attacks, and even death.

According to Consumer Reports, these common substances are found in drugs that can be both from both pharmacies and natural remedies shops. From all of the dangerous ingredients in supplements, they are the most likely to affect the health of a patient.

Most doctors are advising their patients to steer clear of any medicines that contain the above-mentioned chemicals.
