BEACON TRANSCRIPT – A week ago, scientists were baffled to discover a 50-foot sea creature in Indonesia that washed up on a beach. Almost immediately, the social media platforms were flooded with photos of the animal, and everybody kept wondering what the origin of the sea monster was. Now, researchers think that they finally found its species.
Scientists unveiled the mystery of the ‘sea monster’
The massive animal is believed to be a baleen whale. Before researchers started the study of the giant sea creature, people made up stories and myths about the ‘monster’, and some thought it was a giant squid. However, these myths were proven wrong. The newly found sea creature had visible bones. A squid, on the other hand, is invertebrate.
Scientists say it is very difficult to identify a sea creature from a photo. They tried to identify the most specific characteristics present in photos, and came to the conclusion that the creature was a type of baleen whale.
“Once people start sharing specific information that begins to narrow in on defining characteristics of the creature, the identity begins to come into focus,” declared researcher George Leonard.
However, they still have to go and perform an analysis on the spot. The creature is still on the beach, as locals were not able to move its dead body. They asked for government help to remove it from the site.
Dead sea creatures rarely end up on beaches
It is very unusual for dead creatures to wash up on beaches. Most of the times, they sink to the bottom of the oceans and provide consistent food sources for predators. The bodies of dead whales or of other sea creatures can feed them for years.
Researchers tried to find possible explanations for this incident. The most plausible scenario would be a bacterial infection. Such infections produce more gases. These gases and bacteria helped the whale’s body float, and then wash up on the beach.
