American Airlines has been forced to suspend services to some airports in Iowa, New York and Ohio since September due to a shortage of pilots.

The American Airlines report cited a “regional pilot shortage affecting the airline” as the reason for triggering a “tough decision” to sever ties with the four airports.

“We are very grateful for the care and service provided by our team members to our customers in Dubuque, Islip, Ithaca and Toledo, and are working closely with them at this time. We will approach customers who plan to travel after this date in advance to provide alternative arrangements,” the airline said in a statement.

The airline said American Airlines currently flies twice a day from the four affected airports.

In a statement from the Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority on behalf of Toledo Airport, the company said:

“We are incredibly disappointed to learn of American Airlines’ decision to cancel service from Eugene F. Grans Toledo Express Airport (TOL) to Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) from September 7, 2022. Please note that this decision was made entirely by the airline. Primarily due to the shortage of regional pilots.Unfortunately, we understand that this is an ongoing trend in the aviation industry.The Port Authority meets with various airline representatives several times a year in an effort to increase our airline service outside TOL.

A spokesman for MacArthur Airport said in a statement that officials hope to resume a one-day partnership with American Airlines and American Airlines. “We hope this service adjustment will not be permanent.”
