As Americans head to the polls, there are no major cyber threats to the election, according to a senior US official at the top US infrastructure security agency.

In three Election Day press calls with reporters, a senior official at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, who asked not to be named as part of the terms of the call, said the agency had spent the past two years on assistance. State and local election officials are prepared, and the agency knows there are “no specific or credible threats to disrupt the election infrastructure today.”

This is not a guarantee that the election will not face obstacles, the official said.

“There are 8,800 electoral jurisdictions and we see issues emerging every election day,” the official said, citing low-level cyber attacks against election websites or accidental website outages as possible examples.

“It is important to remember that such incidents do not affect a person’s ability to vote,” the official said.

Even as president Joe Biden Asking voters to think of the upcoming election as an “election” rather than a “referendum,” midterm elections are historically a referendum on the party in power.

That’s not a great sign for Democrats, who control the presidency and both houses of Congress. Former President George W. Bush was an exception to this trend. Political analysts attribute the GOP’s gains in the House to a post-9/11 attack rally effect.

Here’s how the parties of recent presidents fared in the U.S. House in midterm races held during their first term:

  • Bill Clinton: Democrats lost 54 seats
