BEACON TRANSCRIPT – The Monroe County Sheriff’s deputies declared that a 13-year-old girl was severely injured on Saturday after her 9-year-old brother shot her in the back of the head over a video game spat. According to the Monroe County’s Sheriff, this case is without precedent and the authorities are unsure whether or not charges will be pressed against the 9-year-old.
Video Game Spat Takes Tragic Turn
It’s quite common for siblings to argue over whose turn it is to use the computer or the console, but for a Monroe County family, this feud turned into a tragedy.
According to Cecil Cantrell, the Monroe County’s Sheriff, on Saturday afternoon, the authorities were summoned to house by a caller who said that someone was shot.
Arriving at the scene, the first responders discovered a 13-year-old girl with a severe gunshot injury. The girl was transported to the Le Bonheur’s Children’s Hospital for emergency surgery.
Following the surgery, the doctors declared that the girl’s chances of making a full recovery are slim, as the bullet fired from her brother’s pistol entered through the back of her head and traversed most of her brain.
The investigation revealed that the 13-year-old was in the living room with her 9-year-old brother, playing video games on the console. At one point, the younger sibling asked his sister for the controller.
The girl refused and continued playing video games while the 9-year-old left the room and went to another area of the house. From there, he retrieved a 9-mm pistol, went back to the living room, and shot his sister in the back of her head.
Cantrell declared that this is the first case where a 9-year-old kid shoots another infant and the authorities are not sure about the legal grounds. The case is being investigated. As for the girl, Cantrell refused to disclose detailed information about her condition following the surgery but stated that the 13-year-old might not survive.
