A recent study claims that cannabis helps heal broken bones as an anti-inflammatory present in the plant can significantly help bone fractures heal.
The study was conducted on rats that had mid-femoral fractures. Scientists discovered that by administering the non-psychotropic ingredient cannabinoid cannabidiol, or CBD, they managed to greatly improve the healing process on the bone after only eight weeks.
Yankel Gabet, from the Tel Aviv University in Israel and one of the lead researchers of the study said that they discovered that CBD alone could be incredibly effective in helping fractures heal. Cannabis, which is also known as marijuana was used as a popular remedy by people around the world for a great deal of time. However, the use of marijuana was forbidden in most of the countries in the world in the ‘30s and ‘40s because of an increasing awareness of addiction and the dangers it brings.
The crucial benefits of cannabis in relieving the symptoms from diseases like cancer, Parkinson’s and numerous scleroses have just recently been re-investigated.
In the study, the scientists injected a group of rats just with CBD and another group with a mix of CBD and THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), which is the primary psychoactive component in marijuana. After the scientists analyzed the administration of CBD and THC together inside the rats, they discovered that CBD alone supplied the essential therapeutic stimulus.
Gabet said that they discovered that CBD alone is able to make bones stronger during the process of healing, improving the maturation inside the collagenous matrix. And this gives the foundation for new mineralization of tissue. He added that after the healed bone is treated with CBD, it will be a lot harder to break the next time.
The scientist said that numerous studies have shown that CBD is an entirely safe agent and this leads the researchers to believe that they should carry on in their line of study of clinical trials in order to better understand the agent’s usefulness in enhancing the healing of human fractures. These new findings might lead to the use of drugs based on cannabinoids that are able to fight osteoporosis and other diseases related to bones.
The new study was posted in the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research.
