BEACON TRANSCRIPT – It seems that the influenza vaccine can be very important. Reports show that the majority of kids who died after contracting the flu between 2010 and 2014 had not received a vaccine. A detailed study was published in the Pediatrics journal on April 3rd.
Everybody should get a flu vaccine
There were registered many flu deaths among children over the past few years. Doctors discovered that many of the deceased had not received the typical flu shot. Therefore, the flu vaccine can prevent death.
Thus, health officials warn parents that shots are really important and advise them to vaccinate their children. Actually, not only children should be vaccinated. All individuals older than 6 months should get a flu shot, with only one exception – those who are allergic to some components in the vaccine.
A shot can prevent death
For the study, the researchers looked at 358 cases of death caused by flu. The children were of different ages, ranging from 6 months to 17 years. Of all 358 cases, only 291 had a definite vaccination status. For the others, doctors could not tell if they had been vaccinated or not.
From all these 291 children, only 26 percent had received a flu shot. The percentage includes only those who had been vaccinated more than 14 days before dying. Other shots cannot be taken into consideration, since it takes at least 14 days for a vaccine to be effective.
Around half of the children who died had already been at a high risk, because they were suffering from heart disease, diabetes, or neurological disorders. Such conditions are more likely to cause complications, and people at high risk must get vaccinated. However, only 31 percent of these children had received shots.
From the children with no complications, only 20 percent had been vaccinated. This is a problem, since parents do not understand how much they risk if they do not let their children be vaccinated. A shot offers 51 percent efficiency for children with dangerous conditions, while it is 65 percent effective for healthy children.
However, there are several children who had no life-threatening conditions, had received a vaccine, and still died from the flu. Indeed, the shot does not offer 100 percent protection. It is still the safest way to protect oneself from the disease and from developing complications.
