BEACON TRANSCRIPT – With everybody talking about drones, it’s no wonder that the military has pushed forward with its plan to deliver the ultimate UAV. According to a recent report, DARPA wants lightweight and super fast unmanned drones to aid soldiers engaged in urban combat situations.
DARPA or the US Defense Advanced Research Project Agency has recently put together quite a spectacular display of aerial prowess. The demonstrations showcased a new generation of self-reliant drones, which according to the agency is capable of navigating through any tight environment littered with all kind of obstacles.
Moreover, the Army’s research branch also stated that this project’s goal is to take the strain off pilots and communication officers, links which are required in order to operate the UAV. DARPA also declared that several key members of the department are working on enhancing the UAV’s navigational algorithms. If the experiment is successful, a UAV will need little to no human supervision in its task.
The goal of this project is to enhance existing navigational algorithms. This, in turn, will allow the drone to fulfill low-level tasks, such as finding its way around obstacles or mapping its environment. By achieving this, the tech specialists will be able to significantly reduce the time needed to communicate with the drone during recon missions.
Also, by enhancing the drone’s self-navigation algorithms, the machine will require less power during its mission and will be able to fly for a longer time.
The project’s called Fast Lightweight Autonomy Program, and its mandate is to create flying drones, small enough to navigate through tight spaces. In the demonstration offered by DARP, the prototype managed to find its way around the environment, while cruising at 20 meters per second.
The scientists in charge of the FTP project aim even higher. Apart from its capacity of navigating through narrow spaces littered with obstacles such as rooms, corridors or stairways, the scientists want to ensure that the drone is self-reliant in every sense of the word. This means that the drone developed by DARPA will be capable of carrying out its mission, even outside the range of a GPS or communication with an operator.

Apparently, the future drone will be small enough to fit through open windows or other openings.
