The Gallup, company well-known for the polls they create, analyzed the percentage of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people (LGBT) in America. The results showed an impressive increase in almost four years.
The percentage of declared LGBT people in 2012 was 3.5. In 2016, 7.3 percent declared themselves as LGBT. The initiators of the poll said that this increase had been influenced by the millennials (people born between 1980 and 1998). Also, LGBT identification was declined among generation X (people born from late 1960s to late 1970s). The reports inform us that an approximate number of 8.3 million adults identified as LGBT in 2012.
The Gallup initiate telephone polls delivering results every day. Around 1.6 million adults are interviewed daily. According to the recent poll results, the initial number of LGBT people increased last year to 10 million adults. The number of the declared LGBT people increased by almost 4 percent.
The poll results also showed that the number of women declaring themselves LGBT exceeded the number of men. Data from 2012 shows that around 3.5% of women identified as LGBT, as opposed to 3.4% of men. Now, the percentage of women raised to 4.4, while that of men to 3.7.
Also, the reports show that the number of white LGBT Americans is the biggest. Then they are followed by African Americans, Hispanic people, Asian people, and lastly, some other ethnicities.
Regarding religion, it appears that the majority of the declared LGBT people are not religious. As expected, the lower numbers are recorded among the highly religious people, while the moderately religious lie somewhere in the middle.
Education wise, the results show that the greater numbers lie among those with a lower level of education, namely high school or less, but the balance is put by the postgraduates who, though, do not occupy the last position.
LGBT people have avoided being open about their sexuality for many decades, due to the strong discrimination and bullying they had to face from radical people. Now their number got pretty close to 10 million people. This shows us the courage they are gathering in order to be open about themselves, but maybe it is also because of the times we live in, when people are trying to be more politically correct and not discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation, ethnicity, religion, or other.
