BEACON TRANSCRIPT – April is the National Donate Life Month and is celebrated everywhere all over the country. Sierra View Medical Center from Porterville, California, wants to take part in the activities which encourage people to become organ donors. Thus, they will be hosting a flag ceremony in front of the hospital.
The health officials and activists are trying to convince people to register as organ donors. There are more than 100,000 people all over the country who are still waiting to receive a transplant. Moreover, every 10 minutes, a new person is added on the waiting list for an organ. Thus, hospitals are in great need of organ donors.
Activities to celebrate life
Sierra View Medical Center has always played a major role in the transplant campaigns. This month, they are trying to both raise awareness on the cause and celebrate those who have decided to become organ donors. Thus, they decided to organize the ceremony.
The hospital started a collaboration with several other organizations, including Donor Network West, and they decided to organize together this ceremony. The initiative is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the Division of Transplantation, and many others.
Donna Hefner, the chief executive officer of the Sierra View Hospital, said how all the organizations and sponsors teamed up to teach people about the importance of being organ donors. They hope that they will convince more people to register as donors.
“The campaign, which has helped to register nearly 400,000 people to state registries, aims to add more donor designations by May 2017 with the help of our hospital and community.”
People are encouraged to become organ donors
Sierra View will participate to other activities and campaigns which will take place during the National Donate Life Month. Actually, they have started their campaigns since March 23rd, when they organized a special registration drive. Back then, both hospital employees and visitors were able to sign up as organ donors.
One person can save the life of eight people if he or she chooses to be an organ donor. Also, tissue donation can help in the healing of 75 people. Around 22 people die every day while waiting to receive a transplant. Only you can change this number. Save a life and register as an organ donor.
