BEACON TRANSCRIPT – Many people take to social media whenever they feel they are going through a dark moment. Unfortunately, not all of them receive the help they need, which can prove fatal for them. Therefore, Facebook decided to release its suicide-detecting tools for everyone, so that they might detect suicidal thoughts before it’s too late.
The new Facebook tools identify patterns associated with suicidal thoughts
These tools are operated by some algorithms which can identify certain patterns among the posts of those who have suicidal thoughts. Once the algorithms signal such posts, they are going to be assessed by humans, who will decide if they should really be worried. Also, the tools will concentrate on alerting those who might react and stop any suicidal action.
These detection algorithms are already available in the US, but Facebook has decided to roll them out worldwide. This action needed to be done, since this service has already identified quite a high number of responses at posts which expressed suicidal thoughts.
These tools helped people intervene when they needed to
The main indicators which helped the tools react to suicidal content were certain comments from other users. It seems that questions like “Can I help you?” or “Are you okay?” are the best signals that something might be going wrong. This technique helped Facebook discover some worrying videos which might have remained undetected.
Zuckerberg thinks these tools are the perfect advocate for AI machines. More people are worried that these tools might turn into an imminent threat. However, now, they are saving a lot of lives, so they might not be as bad as everyone thinks.
Such attempts to detect and stop suicidal thoughts might be a great improvement for Facebook’s image. Lately, the platform has been the target of many attacks, but such actions might work wonders on its image.
