According to new research, in vitro fertilization is more effective if scientists use frozen embryos rather than fresh embryos.
In an experimental trial, 1,508 women tried in vitro fertilization for the first time. Scientists revealed that nearly 50 percent of those who had implanted frozen embryos successfully gave birth, as compared to just 42 percent success rate when fresh embryos were used.
Dr. Zi-Jiang Chen led the study. He works for the Shandong Province Hospital in China. The conclusions were published on Wednesday, in the New England Journal of Medicine.
Over 5 million people across the world were born thanks to in vitro fertilization, according to this study’s authors.
The process works by harvesting eggs from a woman. The doctor then mixes the eggs with sperm to come up with a fertilized egg (zygote).
When a few days’ pass, the zygote starts to divide. It then becomes an embryo. The embryo can be implanted into the uterus straight away or put to freeze for later.
The recent study is one of the biggest studies that look at different ways of in vitro fertilization. The study found that there was a statistically significant difference in how likely was for women to keep the pregnancy.
Almost 33 percent of women who received a fresh embryo lost the baby during their pregnancy, and just 22 percent who were given a frozen embryo lost the carriage.
Frozen embryos also somehow led to a higher weight in babies, at birth.
All the participants in the study were diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). The condition means that women have fluid sacks inside the ovary, which look like cysts.
The condition is many times connected to obesity and an increased level of male hormones. They can cause excessive hair growth and acne. Women with PCOS have irregular periods and can’t get pregnant any other way, except using in vitro fertilization.
The study was the result of a Penn State College of Medicine and Chinese partnership.
Another conclusion of the study was that the differences were not important when it comes to neonatal rates of death.
