BEACON TRANSCRIPT – If you spend a lot of time playing video games, you might soon be regarded as sick. The World Health Organization (WHO) proposed the adoption of the term gaming disorder, and its classification as a highly addictive behavior. This, together with gambling disorder, have been included in a draft of propositions to be included next year on the International Classification of Diseases list.
Gaming disorder might enter the international disease list
The time has come to regard video gaming as a mental health condition. Although it might sound absurd, the experts have labeled the activity as a compulsive behavior, if it is performed without cessation over a long period of time. Therefore, they proposed the diagnose of gaming disorder to be classified as a real disease.
This classification is given by the fact that gaming might easily turn into an addictive behavior. Therefore, from this point of view, gaming disorder can be similar to conditions resulted after substance abuse. The health researchers say the symptoms caused by compulsive drug or medication intake are comparable to those produced by repetitive and addictive activities.
There are many experts who oppose this classification
However, it doesn’t mean that you will now be automatically diagnosed with gaming disorder. At the moment, this condition has only been included on a draft which gets edited on a regular basis. Until it received the official approval of WHO, the disorder won’t become an official diagnosis.
As expected, there are experts who oppose this classification. There are, indeed, many claims which compare gaming to substance abuse, as both stimulate certain areas of the brain. However, the opponents say the type of stimulation gaming produces is more similar to positive activities. Therefore, instead of getting that kick provided by drug use, video games have the same effect as chocolate.
These experts say gaming disorder shouldn’t become a real thing. Instead, doctors should look at individual people rather than making a generalization. If some have a tendency towards an abusive behavior, then they are more likely to become addicted to gaming.
