BEACON TRANSCRIPT – Everybody knows how unpleasant it is when you have to get to a central location and, besides the usual traffic jam that you have to encounter on your way there, you can find no parking space. Worry not, Google has thought of this and is preparing the perfect solution, namely the parking availability alerts in Google Maps.
Android Police identified references to parking alerts in the beta version of Google Maps and even some users found it after downloading Google Maps v9.44 beta. What do these parking alerts actually do? Exactly what one may expect. It announces the user the how difficult it is for him to find a parking place in the given location.
The difficulty comes in three levels: easy, medium, and hard. Each difficulty is provided with specific descriptions. Users will be able to identify parking availability by checking the small P icon situated next to the driving duration estimate. If there is no parking available, the P will turn red.
Google has not revealed yet how they acquire the information necessary to establish parking availability. Other app that provide parking information have different sources. For instance, Parker find out from internet-connected meters in garages and on the street. Other apps have more advanced technology, such as car-tracking cameras, GPS, Bluetooth, leverage motion sensors, or even a combination of all.
Android Police did not find out either the source of parking information that Google Maps will use. They also do not know what other factors may influence Google’s predictions. Some possible factors are the time of day, traffic conditions of the area, or significant events that take place in the area.
Android Police have also taken into consideration a disappointing possibility. The app may inform the driver on all the parking spaces in a given area or take into account the number of spots that are available on average. This means that there is a possibility it would not be able to indicate only the spots that are available at a given moment.
Reports found that the option is not available yet for all users of Google Maps beta but, after the optimization, it will appear on all applications. Anyway, Google will provide the new option on the consumer version of the app that is about to launch this year.
