BEACON TRANSCRIPT – A new study performed by a team of scientists from the University of North Carolina might make you want to give up on extreme workouts. The study found that men who choose a more intense workout program might have a lower libido than those who work out more lightly.
This is the first research that highlights the relation between how men organize their workouts and their sex drive. Previous researches looked only at women. The researchers stated that longer and more intense sessions of training went hand in hand with lower libido levels in men.
Thus, they advise the doctors who deal with sex-related issues in men to ask them if they work out and they follow intense workout sessions.
The researchers created an online questionnaire that about 1,100 participants answered. Most of these participants were professional athletes who underwent intense training sessions for years. The questions were related to their sex lives, for example how often they thought about sex and how often they were engaged in it.
A different set of questions was related to their workout habit, asking how intense and how frequent are their sessions. The last set of questions was related to their medical records and general health.
The research showed a clear pattern in the results. Those men who stated following moderate or light workout showed moderate and high libidos. Also, those who were the adepts of intense workout had lower libido levels as compared to the other participants.
The same pattern remained uniform even after the researchers took into consideration the age criteria, since older men were regarding as showing less sexual interest.
However, the study cannot be conclusive. It has quite a small sample, and the researchers cannot be sure if the participants were completely honest in their responses. Also, the study cannot account for a reason why these two should be connected.
The researchers suspect that the fatigue and the low testosterone levels that follow a workout might be one explanation. They advise men who are worried about their sex drive to try exercising a little less. This might not be the only cause of a decreased libido, but changes in lifestyle can have a positive impact on sex-related issues.
