BEACON TRANSCRIPT – Everybody who was in Gardiner, Maine, over the past weekend got the chance get marijuana for free. All they had to do was to help with the cleaning of trash. Many volunteers offered to help, as they were promised a tempting prize at the end by the Summit Medical Marijuana dispensary. Now, the town looks a lot cleaner.
Pick up trash and get free weed
On Saturday, Summit Medical Marijuana came up with the idea to convince people to engage in community service by offering them a green-themed reward at the end. Everybody who wanted to be part of the project gathered in front of the dispensary. There, they received plastic bags, and started picking up trash from all over the town.
As soon as they filled a plastic bag with trash, they could go back to the dispensary. There, they received a small cannabis bag in exchange for their services. As expected, the event gathered dozens of people who left the town much cleaner. This proved a great initiative which benefitted both the town and its residents.
The event was meant to remove the marijuana social stigma
The Summit Medical Marijuana owner, Dennis Meehan, declared he got his inspiration from a Colorado cannabis club. Last summer, the club organized an event where people had to clean up a park. At the end, all who participated received a free joint.
Apart from helping the town get cleaner, this event wanted to minimize the stereotypes which revolve around cannabis. Also, he hoped that, through this initiative, people would acknowledge the medical uses of marijuana.
This event followed the legalization of recreational cannabis from last fall. The law started being enforced at the beginning of 2017, when it became legal to possess or to ‘gift’ small amounts of the drug. Now, authorities are working on a functional tax program on marijuana.
