BEACON TRANSCRIPT – The most important marine biologists and environmental organizations teamed up in an extensive attempt to save coral reefs. Their conservation will be beneficial for all marine life and will improve conditions in their ecosystems.
Coral reefs are one of the most biologically diverse ecosystems in the world. Thus, their conservation is vital for the well-being of marine life in general. If people act towards the saving of coral reefs, they will also save the oceans and preserve all underwater ecosystems.
Environmentalists and marine biologists are trying to raise awareness of the importance of coral reef conservation. If they do not take action immediately, they risk losing almost 90 percent of all coral reefs, which is a huge figure. The main enemy of the coral reef ecosystem is global warming, which poses a constant threat to them.
Professor Ove Hoegh-Guldberg warns us that the effects of global warming must be stopped as soon as possible. If this does not happen, even corals that survived one bleaching might be in danger. The ocean temperatures must become more stable so that the corals might be able to reclaim their habitat.
Thus, biologists and activists decided to take steps towards saving corals. Firstly, they need to identify 50 of the coral reefs in danger which need immediate intervention. To establish the list, the experts will look at the reefs from a biological point of view, as well as measure their ability to survive in a warmer climate.
After they choose the 50 reefs, they will take protective measures against pollution and overfishing that might be caused by the resorts and fisheries in the area. This will require the cooperation of local governments to impose the necessary measures and restrictions.
This project has already received financial support from Bloomberg Philanthropies, The Tiffany & Co. Foundation, and The Paul G. Allen Family Foundation.
Environmental agencies have received dozens of attacks from the current administration, so they decided to organize a massive march, The People’s Climate March, that will take place on April 29th. Thus, they will bring into the attention of the public the issues caused by climate change, the endangered species, the needs for conservation, and other environmental issues.
