BEACON TRANSCRIPT –Since 2000, measles cases were extremely rare in the US. Now, the number of children diagnosed with the disease is starting to rise due to the outbreak of the condition in Europe. Because parents are not vaccinating their children, the disease is spreading fast especially in Romania and Italy.
Most measles cases in Europe have been discovered in areas where the rate of vaccination is extremely low. In Romania, more than 4,000 cases were reported since January 2016. There were also 18 deaths reported there. In Italy, the number of measles cases is lower, reaching almost 1,500 cases confirmed in 2017.
Despite the condition being eliminated in some areas, it is now rapidly infecting more and more children. Even in the US, the cases of measles are increasing. In Minneapolis, more than ten cases of measles were confirmed. The number of mumps cases is also rising. Six students from the University of Minnesota have contracted mumps.
The health officials in Minneapolis mentioned that these cases are not connected and that they are coincidental. Kris Ehresmann is the director of infectious disease at the Minnesota Department of Health. She suggested that the measles cases were identified in young children that were not vaccinated. In the mumps cases, the vaccine appears to be less strong than the one for measles.
