BEACON TRANSCRIPT- More and more states are trying to fight obesity by creating different bills and taxes that could help people. For instance, in Tennessee, state officials decided to propose a bill that could prevent people from buying junk food with food stamps.
This is not the first state that is trying to prevent people from buying sodas and sweets with food stamps. Arkansas is another state that is proposing a bill just like this one. These two states might manage to pass the bill but it would be almost impossible to prevent people from buying any type of food with food stamps.
If this bill passes it means that foods like ice creams, cake, and cookies would be prohibited from the Department of Agriculture. This bill comes after it was discovered that a lot of families who use food stamps buy more soda than the others. This concerns the state officials because they believe that people who are on public assistance shouldn’t use this money to buy junk food.
There are other states that have tried to limit what can be bought with these stamps. Minnesota, New York City, and Maine are some of the states that have tried to limit the types of foods that people can buy with this.
The problem is that the federal agencies don’t want to change the regulations and people can buy what they want with the stamps. This means that the attempts from states to encourage healthy nutrition are almost in vain.
This bill that stops people from buying sodas and sweets with food stamps could be a great decision for everybody. This is because people would start to buy more healthy food instead of spending their money on “bad food”.
Despite the fact that it is a great decision, it might never be accepted or implemented. The USDA mentioned that they want people to lead a healthier life but they can’t limit people from buying what they want.
We’ll just have to wait and see what it is going to happen in the states that are trying to implement such a decision. Let’s hope that whatever decision they make it is in the best interest of their citizens.
What is your opinion about this bill? Do you think that it is going to be implemented in any state?
