BEACON TRANSCRIPT – You must have already taken a look at the gruesome graphics features in the Resident Evil 7 game. Then the Japanese version of the game would appear completely different to you. Resident Evil 7 was heavily censored even in its country of origin.
The YouTube show Censored Gaming compared the Japanese and the Western versions of Resident Evil 7. They noticed that the extremely graphic elements were replaced in the Japanese version and it does not look like a standard horror game anymore.
For example, a horrifying head for Western players was turned into a photograph of a man which was crossed with a big X for Japanese players. However, the critics regarded the acting voice in the game as way scarier in the Japanese version. If you want to convince yourself, feel free to search for Censored Gaming’s video.
Some industry observers commented on the strong censorship of the game. According to them, there are two Japanese versions of the game. The highly censored one if the mainstream copy of the game. There is also another version of Resident Evil 7 available in Japan, but it known as the Grotesque version.
Unfortunately for many video game retailers, selling the Grotesque copy might be a little challenging. Those who want to buy the gruesome version need to show their ID to prove they are old enough to purchase such a game. This might be a problem for younger players, since Resident Evil has a lot of fans that are not legally allowed to purchase brutal games yet.
However, Resident Evil 7 is not the first game that gets censored in Japan. Actually, game censorship is quite a common practice there. The Japanese authorities do not refrain themselves from censoring any scene that they might find disturbing.
The seventh game in the franchise was released this January by the Japanese company Capcom. It is available for PC, as well as PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The game also has a VR version, but many users have filed complaints against it.
Resident Evil 7 is indeed quite grotesque and brutal, and might prove disturbing for those who are more sensitive or who are not used with such kinds of games.
