Snapchat will soon benefit from a location sharing feature as well
BEACON TRANSCRIPT – Many social media apps have a feature which allows you to share your location with your friends. However, Snapchat was not among these apps, but the developers decided to change that. Recently, they have announced the introduction of a location sharing feature called Snap Map.
Snapchat gets a creative location sharing feature
Snapchat decided to follow the example of Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp, and embraced a new location sharing feature. Snap Map follows a simple concept, namely make it easier for you to let your friends know where you are.
However, Snapchat wanted to bring something new, so the feature will not be identical to those in other apps, which we’re already familiar with. It comes with a fun design and an innovative way to display your location.
No privacy or data usage concerns
As the name suggest, Snap Map will feature a map, and your location will be pinpointed by your Bitmoji avatar. Also, the map displays “heat zones”, namely those areas where people take the most snaps. A Snapchat spokesperson explained the purpose of sharing these heat zones.
“These Snaps are sorted using advanced machine learning techniques that aim to surface interesting Snaps that are also safe and fun for our community.”
Now you may wonder if the feature poses any privacy concerns. However, there’s no need to be worried. The developers revealed that the app starts tracking your location only when you open it. Therefore, it won’t run in the background and keep seeing where you move and what you do.
This is great not only in terms of privacy, but also in terms of battery life or data usage. The feature is economic and allows you to find your friends more easily, without being intruding or endangering your private information.
