BEACON TRANSCRIPT – Sony will be ending the production of PlayStation 3 soon. After a decade of being on sale, they will be taking them away from the market. Don’t worry, this will happen only in Japan, but it might not be long until they stop the production in other countries, too.
PlayStation announced on their official Japanese website that the production of the PS3 console would cease soon. The entry was translated by Gematsu and it read “Shipments are scheduled to end soon”. However, don’t fret. This does not mean that Sony would stop producing the console all over the world.
Japanese customers and those from western countries adapt quickly to the new market and welcome new technology. Thus, the sales of older devices are expected to go down immediately after a new console or feature is released. This is not the case in all countries. Other regions adopt new hardware more slowly, thus older products can still have top sales.
PlayStation 3 was released in Japan and in the United States in November 2006. On the other hand, in Brazil, its production started only in 2010. Thus, Sony are expected to continue producing the console in the region for quite some time.
The early life of PlayStation 3 was not so happy. It was obscured by a high retail price and developers reported that it was hard to add it new features. However, after some time, the console was revived by some big titles which brought it back into the spotlight. The games which brought life back into PS3 were The Last of Us, LittleBigPlanet, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, and Journey.
In 2009, Sony hit the markets with a revised version of the console, namely the Slim model. Then, this version was followed by a Super Slim one in 2012. In 2013, the console was obscured again by the release of the PlayStation 4.
During its lifetime, PS3 sold around 84 million units, which is approximately the same as its main competitor Xbox 360. They are both situated among the best-selling consoles of all time, somewhere behind PlayStation 2, the original PlayStation, and Nintendo Wii.
PlayStation 3 was not as popular as its predecessor, PlayStation 2. Sony ended its production in 2013, after becoming the most popular console of all time, with over 150 million units sold all over the world. Now, Sony will cease the production of PS3 in Japan, and we shall wait and see when they will stop producing it in the west.
