Baby Girl Almost lost her Toe to a Hair Tourniquet

February 6, 2016 By Clayton Meason

"Baby Girl Almost lost her Toe to a Hair Tourniquet "

A baby girl from Kansas almost lost her toe due to a hair tourniquet.

BEACON TRANSCRIPT – Another viral photo takes the internet by assault, only this time it’s not about cats or dresses. Scott Walker from Kansas wanted to raise attention over a matter which looks like a trifle at first glance. His baby girl almost lost her toe to a hair tourniquet that somehow managed to cut the toddler’s blood circulation.

The incident can indeed be considered minor at best. Most of us would think, how can a flock of hair harm my baby? Well, in very rare cases, it would seem that a simple hair can make the difference between good health and a swift trip to the surgery room.

Scott Walker, a 32-year old from Kansas told in a press interview that the whole thing started on the 21st of January, in the afternoon. According to the distressed parent, Molly, his 5-month-old daughter was crying out quite loudly.

Molly’s father, together with Jessica, went to the little tyke to see what’s wrong. His mother said that all attempts made to calm down Molly ended abruptly. Whatever they did, Molly still continued to cry. As she lifted her daughter, the couple observed that the tyke’s sock was wet.

Upon a closer inspection of the foot, the couple saw that Molly’s toe was swollen, with a flock of hair tightly wound around her toe. Luckily, Walker’s wife, a nurse working for the OR managed to remove the hair tourniquet using a pair of tweezers and a magnifying glass.

Fortunately, thanks to Jessica’s medical training, Molly’s hair tourniquet was removed and the baby is alright now. Molly’s father also declared that if were not for Jessica’s training, he would not know what to do.

A baby girl almost lost her toe to a hair tourniquet and now her father shared the picture of the nasty looking piece of hair in order to raise awareness among parents.

Doctor Lolita McDavid, working for the Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital declared that Molly’s condition could have worsened if the hair tourniquet was not removed in time. The doctor also said that there were other cases like Molly’s, but all in all, the condition is pretty rare.

Molly’s condition is called acute digital ischemia. According to the medical literature, there are instances where flocks of hair can get caught in clothes on in socks. Most of the time, there are no issues, but sometimes these hairs can end on toes and even on the penis. If the piece of hair is not removed in time, it can pierce the skin and prevent the circulation in the blood in that area.

In such cases, doctors urge parents to rush their children to the local hospital to get the hair removed.
