BEACON TRANSCRIPT – New research reveals the cannabis and college student love affair. It’s a complicated relationship, with plenty of drinking and cannabis consumption involved. Regular cigarette smoking isn’t as widespread as it used to be.
College students are smoking more marijuana than their counterparts used to, ten years ago. The good news is that other drugs and cigarettes are on a downward trend.
Alcohol remains the most popular choice for the majority of young adults. Experts from the University of Michigan have looked at 1500 full-time students all over the United States.
Out of the group, 38 percent said they used cannabis in 2015, with nearly 5 percent saying they’d used weed more than 20 times in the last month.
The percentages have increased since 2006. Back then, 30 percent of a similar study group had used marijuana in the past month. In 2007, 3.5 percent reported they’d smoked cannabis 20 days out of a month. The figure peaked in 2014, with 5.9 percent of college students who reported smoking pot for more than 20 days out of a month.
The study was supported by the National Institute on Drug Abuse. Another important finding was a change in how students see the risks of excessive marijuana use. There has been a decline from 58 percent to 33 percent of youngsters who see pot as dangerous. Most of them perceive it as harmless, despite the fact that cannabis has some associated risks. Some of the short-term effects of pot use are the risk of heart attack, panic, anxiety, and sleepiness or depression, after the initial “high.” Some long term effects of marijuana are decreased immunity, and lesions to the brain, or reduced sex appetite.
However, that doesn’t stop US college students from smoking heavily. With the current trend of legalizing medical marijuana, it has become more accessible and the risks are overlooked.
The only thing more popular than pot is alcohol – the ‘king’ of campus life for young adults. Its long-term effects are well known, but college students still binge drink. 79 percent have indicated that they used alcohol in the last year and 63 percent drank a lot in the past 30 days.
