The husband of missing Cohasset, Massachusetts woman Ana Walshe was arrested Sunday. NBC10 Boston has learned this isn’t the first time he’s run afoul of the law — he pleaded guilty to federal fraud charges in 2021.

Brian Walshe, 46, was taken into custody and faces charges of misleading a police investigation while officers continue to search for Ana Walsh. The 39-year-old has been missing since New Year’s Day.

Court documents from a federal fraud case shed some light on Brian Walshe’s history with law enforcement. In 2021, Brian Walshe pleaded guilty to federal fraud charges. According to court documents, investigators believe he took the original paintings from a friend and tried to sell the copies on eBay with photos and their documentation.

The case began in 2016 when a buyer saw two Andy Warhol paintings for sale on eBay. According to prosecutors, the list includes photographs of authentication stamps. The buyer arranged for the paintings, part of the “Shadows” series, for $80,000. However, after the assistant took the paintings, the buyer discovered that there were no authentication stamps and that the canvas was new. This eventually led to an FBI investigation.

Court documents say Brian Walshe approached a friend who was the legal owner of the paintings saying he could help sell them for a good price. However, the friend told investigators that after Brian Walshe took the art, he was unable to contact him. The art in question is worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Brian Walshe was arrested in 2018 in that investigation. He eventually pleaded guilty to one count each of wire fraud, interstate transportation, scheme to defraud, possession of altered material and unlawful money laundering.

Court documents detailing the investigation also included references to Ana Nipp, who was identified as Brian Walshe’s wife.

NBC10 Boston reached out to Brian Walshe’s attorney before the arrest. Tracy Minor responded Sunday and confirmed she was representing Brian Walsh, but said she had no comment.

Cohasset police have referred questions about Ana Walshe, a mother of three who went missing on New Year’s Day, to the Norfolk District Attorney’s Office.
