BEACON TRANSCRIPT – A series of reports have revealed children can easily be exposed to disturbing videos on YouTube, which are extremely unsuitable for their age. As a result, the company is preparing a series of measures to prevent this kind of videos from reaching children. If the content proves unacceptable, it will be removed from the platform.
There’s plenty of disturbing content on YouTube which can affect kids
Recently, plenty of videos on YouTube are advertised as displaying content suitable for family. However, more than half of these videos are not actually meant to be viewed by children. Some of them aren’t even suitable for viewing at all, so the company has decided to issue a better control over its content.
YouTube has edited its guidelines to improve infant protection. As a result, under these new regulations, the platform has removed over 500,000 videos and 50 channels which promote content that endangers or exploits children. They also removed all the advertisements which directed users to such videos.
YouTube will make its guidelines and restrictions a lot stricter
However, the wave of disturbing videos might not stop here. Therefore, YouTube is planning to develop a series of tools powered by machine learning technologies to detect possible violations of the new guidelines. Since such machines aren’t always foolproof, it will also increase human supervision of the content.
Such disturbing videos can easily escape the filters and pass as suitable for children. Most scenarios of these videos involve kid-friendly characters put into dangerous situations which might have a negative impact on children.
One video, for instance, showed Peppa Pig drinking bleach, which might make young kids think this is acceptable. What is even more worrying is the fact that the standard algorithms used by YouTube would label such videos as kid-friendly, since they display these cartoon characters. As a result, the platform will increase the age restrictions for certain videos and, when they expose too much, remove them altogether.
